Companies House identity verification is now the law. Your real deadline depends on your role.

Since 18 November 2025, UK company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) must verify their identity. 18 November 2025 was not the deadline - it started a 12-month transition, and every company's own confirmation statement date is its real one. In September 2026 the first directors were fined for not complying. Work out what applies to you in one minute, free.

What the requirement asks, by role

Your situationWhat you must doWhen
Director of an existing companyGive your 11-character personal code with the company's next confirmation statementYour company's own filing date - different for every company
PSCVerify and provide the code via the separate PSC serviceWithin your own 14-day window, shown on the Companies House register
Both director and PSC of one companyProvide the code twice - once per routeBoth of the above
New company or new directorVerify first; the incorporation filing includes every director's code; new directors verify before actingBefore filing / before acting
Overseas company directorVerify by the anniversary of the UK establishment's registrationRolling, per establishment

You only verify once. The personal code is personal to you, not to a company, and you reuse it for every role and company. In September 2026 the Insolvency Service secured its first convictions - three directors fined - and GOV.UK warns that directors who keep acting unverified risk prosecution.

The Companies House ID Verification Pack

  • Role and route checklist: exactly what to do as a director, PSC, both, new appointment or overseas company, on each verification route.
  • Per-company tracker (Excel): every company, its confirmation statement date, who must verify, who has, and a status column that closes the company only when everyone is done.
  • Personal-code guide: where the code lives after each route (Manage account, email, ACSP email) and how to store it safely.
  • Failure-points fixes: app can't confirm your ID, service errors, code and date-of-birth mismatches, expired documents, shared email addresses, no photo ID.
  • PSC 14-day window explainer: where to find your dates on the register and what to file where.

What it is not: fill-in templates and checklists, not legal advice. The pack does not verify anyone and does not guarantee compliance; always follow the current GOV.UK pages linked inside.

Questions

Isn't the deadline 18 November 2025? Did I miss it? No - that is when the requirement started. Existing directors provide their code with their company's next confirmation statement during the 12-month transition (to 17 November 2026), so your date is your company's filing date. PSCs have their own 14-day windows, shown on the register.

I have no passport or driving licence. Use the GOV.UK One Login service to see what else you can use, or ask an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (accountant or solicitor) to verify you - they may charge. The pack lists every accepted document and each route's expired-document rules.

Is this legal advice? No. It is a checklist and tracker pack built only from GOV.UK guidance. Confirm your position against the official sources or with a qualified adviser.
